Ephesians 6:10-20 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Whole Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
Bill Atchison spoke about being strong in the Lord, putting on our armor and standing our ground against the evil at work in the world. We are fighting a battle for the advancement of the Gospel. Jesus is supreme.
The belt of truth allows us to move freely. When we live our lives the way God wants us to, we do not need to worry about what other people say. We are not hypocrites as we are clothed in the breastplate of righteousness making us invincible. The shoes of peace allow us to go out and share the news of Jesus. There are people in the world crying out that they want their lives to change, but they don’t know how. Jesus is the truth and those people need Him. It is up to us to show them the way. The shield of faith extinguishes the fiery darts of temptation, which come from the adversary when he attacks. How we think is how we act and the helmet of salvation secures that nothing in all Creation can separate us from the love of Jesus. He is ours and we are His. We are loved by Him and are part of his eternal family. The sword of the spirit has a double edge, being sharp on both sides. There is a defensive side keeping us from sin and a protective side used against the temptations of the world. The power of prayer is how Jesus fights our battles for us. Prayer needs to be applied continuously with passion and energy that focuses on specific targets for the benefit of others. Prayer is mighty and powerful. Prayer is hard work.
Our call of duty is to be strong in the Lord, to put our armor on and keep it on and to focus on Jesus. Don’t doubt in the dark what you can see in the light.
